My Opinions of The Catcher In The Rye by J.D. Salinger

The Catcher In The Rye by J.D. Salinger Plot: The story starts as Holden Caulfield has recently been expelled from a very expensive private school Pencey Prep in Agerstown, Pennsylvania for failing four classes. He is not very sad about it, because he used to see his school as a prostitute, which claims to have been molding boys into clear-thinking young men since 1888. He also lost popularity in his fencing team, for not going to a very important game. He decides to say goodbye to his history teacher Spencer, who knows that Holden is not coming back to Pencey. Holden meets Spencer in his house, which he finds strange and depressing. They starts a kind of philosophical conversation about â€Å"life is a game†, although Holden keeps on thinking that life is only a game, if you are on the right side. Holden decides that he has enough of Pencey Prep and took a train to New York City, where he plans to stay in Edmont Hotel until Wednesday, because his parents expect him to come home for Christmas vacation on this day. Question: Describe about the African American History? Answer: Nonviolence: The Only Road to Freedom It was felt in the year 1966 that the nonviolence movement of the black people was challenged and many black brethren brought in their doubts regarding self defense in the non violent movement. It was also put forth that every incident of casualty which is arising is being done by the Blacks under the veil of nonviolence to attain freedom. But, the real scenario is that none of the Negroes have in fact resorted to violence in any form (Teachingamericanhistory.org). Various testimonies have been recorded which substantiate this. There are also incidents and reports that point that a single white man has killed and assaulted more people on a single day than that killed by the entire Negro Community. Observations have been made in this regard by the author and he has underlined the subject that the entire Negro population never intends to cause violence and refrain from bloodshed in order to attain independence. The audience in the current article is the Native American population. Regarding the issue of self defense, it has been pointed that many people have at some point of time stated that they prefer to remain silent because they believe that they are likely to lose their cool if they are attacked by the whites. Luther has expressed his view and said that when the people are being made to suffer on a regular basis when their children are being deprived of their rights, their wives are being maltreated and even they are being forced to face discrimination in work places, then it necessarily qualifies the wrongful acts per se (America Magazine). In such a situation, if they can afford to stay calm, then they are supposed to stay calm when they are physically abused as well. The purpose of the Article is to point out that liberty and freedom can be attained through non violent means as well. The good in humanity can be restored through non violent strategies. The example of the student demonstration as a protest against the fact that they were denied to sit and have lunch together with the whites has been drawn in this and it has been very lucidly explained that how putting the authorities under some kind of pressure succeeds in bringing about a change rather than assaulting and causing massacre in the population (Connection.ebscohost.com). It has also been made imperative to resort to human rights in order to achieve the rights that are guaranteed by the constitution. Some strategy regarding this can be followed in the future (Abc.net.au). Peaceful demonstrations have achieved success in history and the same can also witness a success story in the future. Arms and ammunitions cannot help a nation. Rather, what is required to be done is that such marches have to be organized which can make the desired changes in the society. Synagogue Essay A synagogue will look like any other building from the outside the only sign you might get from the outside is the star of David which is called magen David in the Hebrew tongue. There may also be a sign outside stating the name of the synagogue. There are many names for a synagogue such as; shul which means school in Hebrew, bet haknesset, which means house of assembly this is only used by Sephardim, which is oriental Jews. A synagogue is primarily a place of worship but also functions as a community centre for the Jews. The building is so important that the whole Jewish community that worship there will revolve around the building. It is used as a teaching school for Jewish children where they will be taught the Hebrew alphabet, numbers of Hebrew and about their faith. This school is a Jewish equivalent to a Christian Sunday school. If you now go inside you would see that the synagogue is rectangular and although you will not realise it, but the whole synagogue is built facing Israel, if possible, Jerusalem. There will be a sink where the congregation will wash their hands and feet before praying or worshipping. This is because in orthodox synagogues, the men sit on the ground floor and worship and the women sit in the gallery. There is a good reason for this and not because the Jews are sexist but because in Judaism, the men take on the role of worshipping and the women are expected to look after the house and the children so if people were late (the women). This may be because they had to change the baby or something like that so instead of disturbing the congregation and asking a row to stand up so she can get to her seat the mother can just slip into the gallery. The male children will stay with their mothers until they are thirteen and have had their bar mitzvah and then they will join their fathers. So you would go and sit in the appropriate section and you would notice a raised platform in the centre. This is a bimah in Hebrew and it is where the rabbi stands to deliver his sermons. Another name for a bimah is an almemar. The bimah is raised to symbolise that when the scrolls are being read from it, that the scrolls are above the congregation, this shows that the word of god contained in them and god himself is more important and higher than anybody in that congregation. It is also at the centre of the synagogue symbolising that god is at the centre of peoples lives. There will also be a cupboard or alcove called the ark, which is the most important feature of the synagogue as it is where the torah is kept, these will be in the ark and are the Jewish bible. The ark will be covered with a parachet (a curtain) you will know that this place is holy and important, as it will be beautifully decorated and it is the focal point of the whole synagogue. There will be two tables of stone bearing the Ten Commandments, usually above the ark; there will be a menorah, the seven-branched candlestick and the ner tamid, the ever-burning oil lamp. All of these are a reminder of the temple in Jerusalem, which was the first static synagogue; all that remains of this is the west wall. People will now start to arrive. If it is the Sabbath they will arrive on foot, as you are not allowed to drive on the Sabbath. People will be wearing their best clothes probably suits for men and nice clothes for women. Although you will not notice it, but they will not be carrying anything in their pockets or have any hand luggage. The service will now start. As I have already mentioned the rabbi is the spiritual leader of the synagogue but there will also be a cantor or chazan present the man who will lead the Jews in song and prayer these will both be men in an orthodox synagogue as will the rabbi be. You will also notice that there are no pictures of humans on the walls as they are forbidden and the walls will most likely be a plain colour like white for example. The men will also be wearing kippahs a kind of hat, which stands them out as one of gods people and also worn to show respect for god. The males of he congregation will wear the tallit. The tallit is a prayer shawl with six hundred and thirteen tassels to remind the wearer of the six hundred and thirteen laws found in the torah. As I have already mentioned, the ark is the sacred cupboard or alcove in the synagogue. It is the most important place because it contains the torah scrolls which is the Jewish bible. The Hebrew name for the torah scrolls is sefer torah which basically translated to a scroll. The ark will be exquisitely decorated and the curtain will most probably be velvet (the curtain is called the parochet. ) the scrolls itself are also highly decorated. They are made from a parchment an animal skin that has been stitched together to form one long scroll, on this parchment, the five books of Moses are then written going down in columns. One scroll contains two hundred and fifty columns and one scroll is an average of sixty metres long. And at each end the scroll is stitched onto the etz chaim (this is Hebrew for tree of life as the Jews regard the scroll as the most important thing in their lives. One scroll can take up to one thousand working hours to produce and must be done by a trained scribe. A mantle will also cover the scroll. The mantle is a piece of velvet, which will also have silver decorations, also, hanging around one of the etz chaim will be the yad which is Hebrew for hand. The yad is used for pointing whilst reading the torah as the scrolls are not allowed to be touched by the hand of man. This is because the scrolls are so holy that no man, even a rabbi, considers himself important enough to touch them. In the synagogue, there are a few symbolic and holy objects such as the ner tamid an ever-burning lamp which is kept going in the synagogue constantly as a reminder of the presence of god in the synagogue. There is also the menorah which is a reminder of the first temple built where it stood in that temple as a reminder of the seven days it took god to create the world. You may have drawn this conclusion yourself, but if not, then all synagogues in he world follow the same blueprint as the first temple in Jerusalem and anywhere in the synagogue you look there are reminders of this. Examples of this are objects such as the menorah the seven-branched candlestick, the tablets of stone bearing the ten commandments, the ark and the ner tamid the ever-burning lamp showing that god is always present in the synagogue. In conclusion, I know that this synagogue is an orthodox synagogue and not a reformed or liberal synagogue because, the bimah is at the centre of the synagogue symbolising that god and his words found in the torah should be held at the centre of peoples lives. Also, the men and women sit separately and the women arent taking a leading role in the actual worship itself. There would also never be a female rabbi conducting a service at an orthodox synagogue. The services coincidentally, are in about 70% Hebrew in an orthodox synagogue, which is much higher than the percentage of Hebrew, used in reform or liberal services. There is also no music played and the hymns and songs are sung without the aid or backup of music. In a liberal or reformed synagogue however things would be very different, for instance, there is quite a large chance that a female rabbi would be conducting the service, the man and women are more equal they sit together and worship together as one big mass. The bimah may be at the front which, in my opinion, gives a sense of preaching and I think Jews know their religion, they dont need to be educated about it they just want to worship god. There also may be an organ to accompany songs and hymns because music is permitted in reformed synagogues. There would also be slightly less Hebrew spoken. So this synagogue I have described to you is an orthodox synagogue. Orthodox translates to right belief and is considered to be traditional Judaism.

When he is running with the heard to try and escape, he notices two man trying to steal everything from two woman. He runs over to the situation, without thinking, and tries to ward the men off. Of course since there were two of them, and one of him, he took a little bit of a beating. But in the end he did succeed. Next he spots a man who has fallen off of his cart in the midst of a thousand other horse carts. These carts were not moving very fast, but of c ourse no one was willing to stop to look out for this poor fellow. Again almost automatically the narrators brother puts himself in danger for the life of another. He jumps into the middle of all the commotion to try and save the man who had fallen. Unfortunately, he is unable to reach him in time, and the man is run over and crippled by an oncoming cart. Regardless of this blunder, the narrator’s brother’s actions impressed me the most winning him the title of best character. 3. Importance of Court Case of Korematsu v. United States Korematsu v. United States was a Supreme Court case that was decided on December 18, 1944, at the end of World War II. United States In 1942, Franklin Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, allowing the U.S. military to declare parts of the U.S. as military areas and thereby exclude specific groups of people from them. The practical application was that many Japanese-Americans were forced from their homes and placed in internment camps during World War II. Frank Korematsu, a U.S.-born man of Japanese descent, knowingly defied the order to be relocated and  was arrested and convicted. His case went to the Supreme Court, where it was decided that exclusion orders based on Executive Order 9066 were in fact Constitutional. Therefore, his conviction was upheld. The Courts Decision The decision in the Korematsu v. United States case was complicated and, many might argue, not without contradiction. While the Court acknowledged that citizens were being denied their constitutional rights, it also declared that the Constitution allowed for such restrictions.  Justice Hugo Black wrote in the decision that all legal restrictions which curtail the civil rights of a single racial group are immediately suspect. He also wrote that Pressing public necessity may sometimes justify the existence of such restrictions. In essence, the Court majority decided that the security of the general citizenry of the US was more important than upholding the rights of a single racial group, during this time of military  emergency. Dissenters in the Court, including Justice Robert Jackson, argued that Korematsu had committed no crime, and therefore there were no grounds for restricting his civil rights. Robert also warned that the majority decision would have much more lasting and potentially damaging effects than Roosevelts executive order. The order would likely be lifted after the war, but the Courts decision would establish a precedent for denying rights of citizens if the current powers that be determine such action to be of urgent need.   Significance of Korematsu v. United States The Korematsu decision was significant because it ruled that the United States government had the right to exclude and forcibly move people from designated areas based on their race. The decision was 6-3 that the need to protect the United States from espionage and other wartime acts was more important than Korematsus individual rights. Even though Korematsus conviction was eventually overturned in 1983, the ​Korematsu ruling concerning the creation of exclusion orders has never been overturned.​​ Korematsus Critique of Guantanamo   In 2004, at the age of 84, Frank Korematsu filed an amicus curiae, or friend of the court, brief in support of Guantanamo detainees who were fighting against being held as enemy combatants by the Bush Administration. He argued in his brief that the case was â€Å"reminiscent† of what had happened in the past, where the government too quickly took away individual civil liberties in the name of national security.

“Syriana” and Successive Marxist Theory Essay Example for Free

â€Å"Syriana† and Successive Marxist Theory Essay Stanley Aronowitz and William Difazio’s work on contemporary Marxist theory following and analyzing Fordism views of labor as a means to exploit and control workers is very interesting when applied to the film, â€Å"Syriana†.   Their ideas illuminate the problems with Fordism (referring to Henry Ford’s method of car production) and its technological effects on control of both workers and their time. Creating â€Å"endless† work through technology and its reach beyond the workplace (cell phones, internet, etc) and, also, alienation from the social processes outside of work, such as in the family and community are part of this Marxist theory. Their idea, also, points to Capitalism used to exploit people, through a dogma or ideology of the need to perform this meaningless and endless work.   Aronowitz and DiFazio believe that when people are free from a menial, controlled, and exploitative environment, then only then can they be free to become part of the social processes outside of work and in the rest of the world around them. The exploitation of all the main characters in â€Å"Syrianaâ€Å", through their various jobs and the contrasting roles of other members of their family, who had more time to â€Å"play† is central to this thesis.   There were four dyads that should be highlighted throughout the film to make this point.   When freed from meaningless work, many different roles can be seen, when exploited by it we can see opposite roles.   George Clooney’s character â€Å"Bobby† is an example of a worker, who was exploited by his employer (the United States CIA). His job life consisted of constantly working for this organization with a mention from one of his former co-workers that he has been â€Å"used† and he probably never even knew why. He states that he never did need to know.   He is used as a â€Å"fall guy† for this organization when an operation goes awry.   This exploitation is an example of what can happen when a worker is constantly alienated from all other processes going on around him.   His son, in contrast, shows interest in â€Å"playing†, in going to college, rowing, and in girls.   He claims to want a normal life, the opposite of what his father has.   But, in the end, when â€Å"Bobby† is under investigation and free to make his own choices, he chooses to do what he believes is right in saving a prince that is to be assassinated.   Only when he is free from his exploiters, can he be free to make his own choices. Another dyad is that of â€Å"Bryan† (Matt Damon’s character) and his son â€Å"Maxâ€Å".   Bryan is an energy analyst and, through Aronowitz and DiFazio’s idea of endless work, Bryan is asked to and agrees to working on his son’s birthday.   While Bryan is working, the family is playing, and this in a very strong point to this thesis, proves fatal.   His son is killed in an accident, caused by technology and its imperfection. If it were not for both technology and endless work, the son, â€Å"Max† would still be alive.   In an interesting twist to this, â€Å"Bryan† goes on to work as an advisor for the same visionary prince that â€Å"Bobby† tries to save.   When â€Å"Bryan† is freed from his analyst job, he goes on to work for this visionary in an attempt to help change the world for the better. â€Å"Bryan† mentions the slow pace of the Persian people and how their work ethic seems different and slower.   He sees this as a sharp contrast to his position that led him to endless work and his son’s death. Two other dyads should be examined and that is of   â€Å"Bennett† the attorney for a powerful oil company and his father and that of a Pakistani, who calls himself â€Å"Johnny† and his father.   Both of these fathers are out of work and have more time to think and play.   â€Å"Bennett† spends so much time working that he cannot see the harm he is doing, though his father has time to think and drink (excessively) and he disagrees with his son’s work.   This shows the negative side of unemployment and disengagement with civil life, which can occur if one does not apply themselves to using their capabilities. â€Å"Bennett’s† father does show his son negative attention, which is all he can do.   Similarly, â€Å"Johnny† desires money to bring his mother to be with his father and he.   The father is shown playing and enjoying the freedom from meaningless work, while â€Å"Johnny† searches for something meaningful.   In a negative twist to this â€Å"Johnny† is recruited and exploited to be a suicide bomber and then his life does have meaning, but it is in his death.   Without this dogma of the meaning of work and the need for commodities, these dyads would not be so complicated.   Work and the idea of â€Å"meaningful† work puts a rift in these families and causes social disease (alcoholism and religious extremism).

Comparing Solomon and Gaeynor to Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet Essay

Solomon and Gaeynor is little more than another,   more modern version of Romeo and Julliet.   The basic story line in Solomon and Gaeynor is about a couple who fall deeply in love,   but face the problem that their families are very different,   and would never agree to a marriage between the two of them.   Similarly in Romeo and Julliet,   a young couple fall hopelessly in love,   but due to the dispute amongst the two families,   it is not possible for them to marry,   and live happily ever after.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Solomon,   a young Jewish man meets a welsh girl,   whilst he is going from door to door in order to sell cloth for making clothes.   They fall in love within a short period of time,   however Gaeynor is not aware that Solomon comes from a Jewish background.   Likewise his family do not know of his Welsh lover.   After he meets Gaeynors family and is halfway accepted by the them,   Gaeynor becomes rather suspicous that he is keeping their relationship so secret,   and that he has never presented her to his family. In Romeo and Julliet a similar barrier stands between the two lovers,   however in this case both the lovers were aquainted with the fact.   The main difference however is that in Romeo and Julliet the lovers are being held apart by a war,   which divides the two families.   In comparison,   Solomon and Gaeynor are being kept apart by the fact that they derive from different religious backgrounds.   Gaeynor is of Jewish origin,   and as has often been so in the course of history,   the Jewish people have been hated by the local population,   and were blamed for local... ...meo and Julliet there was no baby that added to the confusion of the situation.   However in Solomon and Gaeynor,   the latter becomes pregnant,   and as a result creates a greater bond between the two lovers,   aswell as adding to the complication of the situation. All in all though,   both of these couples suffered a very similar fate,   and had their love and feelings for each other surpressed by the society,   and especially the family.   Certain subtle differences do appear in the two stories,   as well as a difference in the location and time,   but when one looks at the basic structure of both stories,   we arrive at the same result.   Two young people fall in hopelessly in love,   and everything ends in a disaster,   as one of them (or both) die fighting for something that their family hated them for.

Hamlet Comparison Rough Edit

Kenneth Branagh’s production of Hamlet and The Royal Shakespeare’s Company production of Hamlet are hard to compare with each other. In terms of Hamlet’s famous soliloquy in the portrait scene, his meeting with Ophelia, the queen’s ability to stand up for herself and Hamlet’s reaction and response to his father’s ghost, the Branagh Hamlet exceeds my expectations on how these parts are performed. The branagh version of Hamlet’s soliloquy in the portrait scene really depicts what I imagined it would sound like.For his soliloquy, his quietness of voice seems proper for this moment with himself. His words, â€Å"To die; to sleep; To sleep; perchance to dream; ay, there’s the rub,† are all solemnly said, Branagh creates this serious mood using his tone of voice. No boisterous movements, his slow steady walk to the mirror to look upon himself creates a serious atmosphere. I didn’t expect this soliloquy to be sad or gloom y, and Branagh did an excellent job making this serious. He was amazing acting out this part and taking on Hamlet’s emotion and character seriously.Unlike the Branagh version, The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) doesn’t depict this certain soliloquy well. Although I am delighted that they did create a serious mood, they did skip part of his soliloquy relative to the original book. Although there is still the serious atmosphere in place, the omitting of several lines takes away some sympathy for Hamlet. As well, Hamlet’s facial expressions go from serious to sad, and over again repeatedly. It doesn’t seem right that Hamlet is depressed; this serious atmosphere doesn’t coincide with his sadness very well.I do get the impression he is serious and thinking deeply at the moment, but his gloomy nature makes me feel and think otherwise of him. I also like the Branagh Hamlet for his meeting with Ophelia. I feel sympathy for Hamlet as he has a right to be u pset. His weeping, even Ophelia’s weeping made my sympathy for him grow. But Ophelia seems to actually be sad rather than acting on behalf of her father and the king which is something I like about this play. Hamlet’s physical nature towards her, a lot of it was unnecessary.This meeting was important as to see what impact Ophelia had on Hamlet, and what gave him the push to put on his mad act. Unlike the Branagh Hamlet, the David Tennant Hamlet was nothing like I thought he would be in his meeting with Ophelia. Although she is acting sad, her genuine concern is overlooked since she is acting only for the benefit of Polonius and Claudius. As well, when she says, â€Å"Heavenly powers restore him! † and, â€Å"O help him, you sweet heavens! † she overdoes these parts by the throwing of her hand up and lying on the floor. As well, Hamlet’s runs to her after she says these things are too much.If I were angry I would not run back to my lover and cry and physically touch her, I would keep away from her so she wouldn’t hurt me anymore. This scene with Ophelia disappointed my thought on how Hamlet would act. It was as disappointing as Christmas with no gifts, it was that bad. Another scene in these movies which is important is the arras scene. In Branagh’s Hamlet, the Queen acts strongly for herself. Despite the unfortunate ending of Polonius, Gertrude acts strong against Hamlet and his physical force. By doing this she is showing what power she has as a woman.This can be a positive influence to woman as they can see that they have power and independence on their own and don’t have to be man-handled. The only thing I didn’t like about her was her tenacious attitude towards Hamlet; he didn’t deserve any of that from her. But her fighting spirit and independence displays to the viewer that they should stand up and fight against their problems, whatever they may be. However, the queen in RSC is just a failure to conceive. She is too easily pushed around by Hamlet and the men in this play (Claudius and Polonius) have too much power over her.She doesn’t seem to be independent; she seems to have no problem being held in a vice-grip by her husband. Furthermore, she is physically apprehended by Hamlet and doesn’t try to escape or struggle against him. Her independence in this scene is downright disappointing, and it’s creating the image for woman that they don’t have any power for themselves. Her drinking and smoking before her meeting with Hamlet indicates how she copes with the stress of the situation, and the viewer is influenced by her actions to possibly do the same when they are stressed.As well, another element I delight in Branagh’s Hamlet is the reaction and actions of Hamlet when he listens and talks to his dead father. His quick, immediate response to his father is as I thought it should be. He shows immediate respect for his father, obeyi ng every word with a swift response to his mother. Despite his strong feelings of anger towards her, when he’s told that she wasn’t involved in his death, he shows immediate signs of compassion to her. His honour-like character in the moment shines through to his mother and she becomes happy with him.The great Hamlet as described by Ophelia, â€Å"The expectancy and rose of the fair state,† (Act III, scene 1 line 154) shines through is the Hamlet everybody has been waiting for. But his trance-like state is something that doesn’t disappoint me, but I’m not happy with that state he turned into. If I were Hamlet, I would be scared more than just frozen in place. David Tennant in this scene does make Hamlet scared, but makes him seem out-of-his-mind scared. His mother is concerned for his well-being of course, but thinks he is absolutely nuts!His care and affection for his father I cannot see because he is too scared to show anything. His prostrate pos ition to the widening of his horrified face just doesn’t impress me, it’s like he’s overreacting or trying too hard to act scared. In doing this, it makes me lose sympathy for Hamlet. Overall, I enjoy much more the Kenneth Branagh Hamlet rather than the RSC’s Hamlet. The play was performed much better and all the elements within the play just flowed more smoothly. I strongly recommend this version of Hamlet over any other version. Word Count: 1,074 words

Meals

Meals on Wheels Meals on Wheels was a very good community service that taught me some good things. Meals on Wheels is a voluntary work service that deals with elderly people who are sick, from diabetes to cancer. We as voluntary workers drop food off to these sick people who are registered through the hospital. There are many different types of patients you meet. They all happen to be around the same area as well. As we stop by the meals on wheels headquarters we first sign in and then pick up cooler full of cold food and a warm lunch bag to put the hot meals in.We then drive over to SST. Jude hospital where we pick up the hot food that has the patients names labeled on them. From here we drive to each patients house or apartment complex and drop off their assigned foods, which is one cold food meal pack, one milk, and a hot meal pack. Some places are so easy as getting off and dropping it off in the ice box they have set in front of their house or apartment complex while other patie nts e have to ring the door bell and hand it to them.Some days we will talk to some of these patients. For instance, at one of the first stops an older lady would come outside as we drop the food off and explain to me as she's very sick and doesn't feel well. Then go to explain how we walk with Jesus because we are doing this for her and how we are very blessed for doing it. It goes to show me how lucky I am for being young and healthy at the age I am and not take life for granted.Another Instance loud be an elderly guy who sits outside with his dog everyday before we pull up to drop his food off. He always seems to be In a very good mood and explains to me how I should be at the beach and not here doing this service. It shows the different kinds of people that are out there and there perspective towards things. Most of the people have their kids or husbands answer the door for them to get their food. At the end of the day we have delivered the food to twelve different people and he ad back to theMeals on Wheels headquarters where we drop off the lunch bag and the cooler. That Is the typical day of the Meals on Wheels service work. Hopefully some day In the future I can do this again on my free time.

How vaudeville theatre elements are found in entertainment today - Research Paper Example The decline of the Vaudeville genre can be traced to the rise of the cinema. Despite the fact that Vaudeville genre no longer exists in its entirety, some of the signature elements of Vaudeville can still be found in the American entertainment industry today. These elements include family entertainment, sensationalism, slapstick, and variety. As earlier stated, Vaudeville gained popularity after the American Civil War. The genre had however been introduced before 1820. At the beginning, the Vaudeville genre only appealed to the men in the society and it mainly had male performers. It was seen as the new and cheerful entertainment that provided the society relief in the times before and after the civil war. It was not until 1865 when Tony Pastor changed this to a form of Vaudeville that included men, women, and children. This followed the opening of ‘Tony Pastor’s Opera House’ in New York. The form of theatre included performances in which objectionable words had b een removed, and was thus appealing to the entire family. This form of Vaudeville genre remained in the entertainment scene for a long time. Later, different creative artists would follow the conventions that had been set by Tony Pastor in Vaudeville theatre performances. They also began to make use of female performers to further to promote the theatre (Page, 4). The acts in the Vaudeville genre consisted of a total of up to 15 different performances that included jugglers, trained animals, acrobats, singers, magicians, and dancers. The Vaudeville genre however evolved to the point where it became a form of light musical drama. There are some Vaudeville theatres that have however retained the original format and can be found in areas such as England. There are also some few theatres in the United States that continue to showcase the different forms of Vaudeville genre. In most cases however, there are only some of the elements of the original Vaudeville genre that can be seen in th e different genres of entertainment that can be found in the American entertainment scene (Bandle 1546). The success of the Vaudeville genre was mainly because of the level of mastery that the different artists that took part in the performances showed. They (the artists) were skilled in the use of the different tools that they had. They were also skilled in utilizing the stage to maximize the effect of their performance. The stage was set in such a way that it made use of few definite possibilities of use. The stage however allowed the use of scenery and lights to be manipulated by the writer or by the creator of the specific performances. From the present study it is found that 41% of the respondents referred power point presentations are used as the visual aids in their training programme. It is found that 97% of the respondents say that the external training programmes are provided to them in the organization. SUGGESTIONS Job rotation method of training is very useful to the executive persons for understanding job linkage with varied skills. Programmed instructions seminars will increase the knowledge of the executives Behavioural training programs like role playing are necessary to improve the psychological fitness of the executives so as to face any kind of problem at any stage. Some additional reinforcement programs can be conducted to chisel the skills of the executives to remain competent enough to face the challenges of the changing technological, social environmental factors. Training programs, which are necessary to improve the ethical values moral values of the executives should be conducted. Field study exposure to customers working place will be helpful for executives to improve their performance. Training programme should be conducted in a periodical manner and updations of our technical and on the job training is necessary for better performance and improves our efficiency. According to Roger Lewis, â€Å"The acquisition of money and love are both part of the same dream, the will to return to the quintessential unity that exists only at birth and at death† (41). In both William Shakespeare’s play, Hamlet, and F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby, the protagonists are willing to sacrifice all that they have in order to achieve their unrealistic objectives and ambitions, resulting in their tragic demises. While there are many themes and concepts relevant to both Hamlet and The Great Gatsby, their parallels regarding their aspirations stand out for further evaluation. The concept of sacrificing all that a person has, not limiting to their own life, is ever present in these works. Both Hamlet and Gatsby make evident that they are willing and are capable of sacrificing all that is themselves to possibly reach their ultimate goal. Throughout William Shakespeare’s play, Hamlet, the Prince of Denmark is set on his goal of achieving vengeance and justice for his father’s murder, without the realization that his obstinate aspirations eventually lead to his own downfall. Unlike many other characters, Hamlet is very analytical; he makes very calculated and thoughtful moves before he acts, ultimately leading him to his death. â€Å"Hamlet represents the type of man whose power of direct action is paralyzed by an excessive development of his intellect† (Freud, Sigmund). This is furthermore supported when Hamlet is given a golden opportunity to attain vengeance for his father, but does not kill Claudius, the king of Denmark, for Hamlet mistakenly assumes that Claudius is praying. Hamlet: Now might I do it pat. Now he is a-praying. And now I’ll do’t. And so he goes to heaven. And so am I revenged, That would be scanned. A villain kills my father, and, for that, I, his sole son, do this same villain send, To heaven. Oh, this is hire and salary, not revenge. (Hamlet, III, iii, 74-80) Hamlet misses an opportune chance to complete his mission, one to which he would have no opposition, but loses his chance due to his over-excessive thought process. On the other hand, Jay Gatsby is a person who appears to be motivated by only his urges and emotions; no other forces drive him more than his ultimate love lust. â€Å"Gatsby does not appear as a man of ordinary disposition acting under the direction of ordinary, explicable impulses. He appears instead as one under the spell of some enchantment† (Langman, F.H.). In other words, Gatsby himself was driven by a mighty inner need to reattain his once lost love. Through this, we see that Gatsby was not controlled by anything but his heart; his heart controlled his actions and thought process, and had completely consumed his entire life since his breakup with Daisy. Gatsby was willing to adjust himself to what Daisy seemed to desire at that moment. He hadn’t once ceased looking at Daisy, and I think he revalued everything in his house according to the measure of response it drew from her well-loved eyes. Sometimes, too, he stared around at his possessions in a dazed way, as though in her actual and astounding presence none of it was any longer real. Once he nearly toppled down a flight of stairs. (Fitzgerald, F. Scott, 112) In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby has made it his life mission to donate all of his possible energy and resources to attempt to acquire his love once lost. According to Carla Verderame, â€Å"The novel concerns itself with the struggles of reinventing oneself to attain the dreams and pleasures of one’s youth. In Gatsby’s case, the effort goes terribly awry.† Gatsby, throughout the novel, strives to retrieve his long lost love; he is willing to conform himself to whatever means he must conform to in order to achieve his end desired goal. â€Å"The poor boy who becomes a millionaire by extra-legal activities endeavors to recapture Daisy Buchanan by means of his newly acquired wealth. This ostentatious, mysterious character becomes the exemplar of the American dream and its flaws† (Bruccoli, Matthew J.). Jay Gatsby spends years of his life involved in illegal activity in order to accumulate enough wealth to be able to throw many parties, all for a possible chance to see his love once lost, Daisy. In this, both Jay Gatsby and Prince Hamlet are willing to sacrifice all that they have, not limited to themselves, in order to achieve their unrealistic goals. In comparison, Hamlet is content with altering his life and his current relationships, all for the sake of being closer to his ultimate goal, vengeance for his father. â€Å"Hamlet lacks faith in G-d and himself. Consequently he must define his existence in terms of others†¦ He would like to become what the Greek Tragic hero is, a creature of situation. Hence his inability to act, for he can only ‘act’†, i.e., play at possibilities† (Auden, W.H) Hamlet is willing to act mad, ruining all of his relationships, not limited to his romantic life, for a futile opportunity to get close enough to Claudius to kill him. Although both Jay Gatsby and Prince Hamlet are willing to sacrifice all for their aspirations, Gatsby puts on a false front, while Hamlet covers his; Gatsby pulls a facade as though he had been wealthy throughout his entire life, while Hamlet feigns insanity. Gatsby has attempted to pull a facade of him having always been wealthy, thus allowing him to be part of Daisy’s circle. Gatsby claims to have inherited his vast sum, hiding that he had actually self accumulated it over the years. By pretending to be wealthy to belong in an elite class, he is hoping for the opportunity and chance to have the ability of mixing in with Daisy, his lost love. â€Å"Past the last door to the last room and Gatsby’s facade is still up; he is still marshaling, even in his bedroom ‘many colored disarray’, literally pilling up: there is no end to his ‘soft rich heap’†¦But despite all the wealth they embody, they remain piles of things† (Lhamon Jr, W.T., 58). Though Jay Gatsby indubitably pretends he fits into the elite rich’s circle, he did not belong there in the least. Gatsby goes so far as to change his name, the one part of a being that will always be himself infinitely. He had gone so far as to change his name and identity as though it could be almost impossible to separate the fake facade from the real being. While delving so deep into a lie and false pretense, one can presume that likely at a point the two merged, creating a sort of equilibrium state, as though there had genuinely existed a ‘Jay Gatsby.’ â€Å"[Gatsby’s] parents were shiftless and unsuccessful farm people- his imagination had never really accepted them as his parents at all. The truth was that Jay Gatsby of West Egg, Long Island, sprang from his Platonic conception of himself. He was a son of God†¦ he must be about His Father’s business, the service of a vast, vulgar, and meretricious beauty. So he invented just the sort of Jay Gatsby that a seventeen year old boy would be likely to invent, and to this conception he was faithful to the end.† (Fitzgerald, F. Scott) In contrast, Hamlet has dissembled his true noble self in order to feign madness to draw Claudius near. Hamlet is far superior than any other characters in Hamlet, intellectually and with a potent inner strength. He embodies many incredible capabilities and abilities; Hamlet can be considered a paradoxical character, being both witty and cautious, kind but stern, etc. â€Å"[Hamlet] is endowed with the finest sense of propriety, susceptible of noble ambition, and open in the highest degree to an enthusiastic admiration of that excellence in others of which he himself is deficient. He acts the part of madness with unrivaled power† (Schlegel, August Wilhelm Von). Hamlet is inherently a noble and imperial being, therefore, for him to dissemble himself and conceal it enables him to feign his insanity, for insanity is much less noble than nobility. Hamlet appears to be a strong character, both physically and mentally. He is a very elegant thinker, who is by far more intellectual than his peers. â€Å"The character of Hamlet stands quite by itself. It is not a character marked by strength of will or even of passion, but by refinement of thought and sentiment† (Hazlitt, William). Hamlet is a very unique character in regards to his highly mature and noble sophistication. While it seems that Gatsby was not deserving of his vastly enourmous wealth along with the status that accompanied it throughout the book, on the contrary it is possible that he might in fact had been. One could argue that in reality he was a nobel character, deserving of his status in elite circles . Whether or not Gatsby had indeed inherited his sum or had invested legally or illegally, he truly did acquire an enormous sum of cash. Gatsby had come into life with almost nothing to his name, and had left it with enormous wealth. He was an honored individual who served his country and truly can be referred to as the epitome of the American Dream throughout his life. Gatsby ‘represented everything,’ Nick says, for which he feels â€Å"an unaffected scorn.† Even when he tells Gatsby, on their last meeting, that he’s ‘worth the whole damn bunch put together,’ Nick continues to disapprove of him on a social level. Gatsby has redeeming qualities, however†¦ Parts of his fantastic story turn out to be true. He had been a war hero, and has the medal from Montenegro to prove it. He had actually attended Oxford—for five months, as a postwar reward for military service, and produces a photograph in evidence. Above all, there was nothing phony or insincere about his dream of Daisy (Donaldson, Scott). That being said, it is important to also reanalyze Hamlet’s position; Hamlet could well possibly have not been concealing his true self, but rather trying to develop his plan cognitively. Although the question remains if he had truly become consumed by his ‘madness charade‘ or if it had been an act all along, William Shakespeare gives no indication in his work. â€Å"Hamlet, a very unconventional hero whose eloquence and endless deliberation on why he cannot consummate the revenge his father desires underscores his essential rhetorical role in the play. While Hamlet so eloquently describes his feelings, the question remains as to whether he actually feels them† (Bloom, Harold). Although it may appear that he had lost himself, if not beginning with his escapade concerning his old girlfriend then with his seemingly drivel conversations, it is highly likely that Hamlet had just been playing a part. This is seen when Hamlet is able to not only save his own life from the decree put forth by his uncle, but to complete his mission in the end as well. While there are many germane ideas present in both literary works, their parallels to each-other regarding their willingness to achieve their aspirations are regarded as a main point to be extracted for further assessments. Both protagonists were willing to do about anything, including altering their destinies, in order to achieve some aspiration of theirs, regardless of how unrealistic it may be. According to Khalil Gilbran, â€Å"To understand the heart and mind of a person, look not at what he has already achieved, but at what he aspires to.† (97) This being said, both Gatsby and Hamlet are intricate characters with much to delve and dissect on; though they both died tragic deaths, their deaths were not in vain for their legacies continue onward.
